Gingerah Energy Hub

Early Stage (Pre Seed) Energy Pilbara

Back to investment opportunities

Seeking investment value of $10 million - $40 million

Project Summary

Theia Energy, partnering with the Karajarri Traditional Lands Association, the representative body corporate of the Karajarri People, is at the forefront of the energy transition by harnessing the natural resources of the Gingerah area with the support and wisdom of the Karajarri People.

This land, situated in the locality of Gingerah hosts abundant natural resources including the earth’s heat, solar irradiation, wind and groundwater. Theia Energy together with the Karajarri People identified the opportunity to build the Gingerah energy hub, a 3GW renewable energy hub to produce 1 million tonne per annum (mtpa) of zero-emission ammonia. Energy will be produced from a mix of renewable energy sources including: solar pv, concentrated solar, wind and geothermal energy. Groundwater will be sustainably sourced and used for electrolysis producing pure hydrogen gas and oxygen from 1.2GW electrolyzers.

Project Description

Land access and location
Situated on Vacant Unallocated Crown Land with access to major ports the Gingerah Energy Hub is ideally located in an area with manageable environmental sensitivities, the support of traditional owners, secure access to the site and proximity to major ports facing the Indian Ocean. Our permits include wind and solar resources (10,000 km²) and geothermal energy resources (3,600 km²) with the potential for future storage of carbon and/or hydrogen in known geological formations.

Traditional owner owned
Theia Energy is working with the traditional owners of the land and the Western Australian Government to perform the site characterisation works required to define the project scope and concept in such a way that environmental impacts are net positive and sustainable.

Green hydrogen
Green hydrogen is produced using electrolysers that separate hydrogen and oxygen from water. Air separation units strip nitrogen from air, which is synthesised with hydrogen from electrolysis using the Haber-Bosch technique to produce green ammonia (NH3).

Green ammonia
Initially, the hub will produce 1 mtpa of green ammonia from up to 3 GW of renewable energy capacity from a mix of renewable energy sources. The capacity needed and footprint will depend on the type of renewable energy used taking sustainability, availability and affordability into consideration.

Sustainability
Harnessing the abundant renewable energy
resources of the Gingerah region including solar, geothermal and wind energy to produce green hydrogen and ammonia.

A combination of generation methods will meet sustainability objectives. The area has a high geothermal gradient allowing energy production from the earth’s heat in combination with solar PV and concentrated solar and potentially wind energy to deliver reliable cost-effective energy with the least environmental disturbance.

Water is sustainably sourced from deep aquifers and treated as needed for electrolysis.

Investment Opportunity Details

Theia Energy is inviting investors to join the project to fund the pre-feasibility phase followed by a bankable feasibility study. Incoming investors will have the opportunity to shape the project and secure supply of low emissions hydrogen and ammonia for domestic use and/or export to Asian markets

Guide on creating an investment project

1. Add investment project details

Tell investors about your investment project:

  • Describe your investment opportunity sufficiently for potential investors to understand the project and why you are seeking external funds of investment.
  • Articulate your investor proposition. This is your opportunity to share your story and your vision to an engaged investor audience.
  • Provide specific information in relation to the investment project – corporate entity/ownership, ABN / ACN, trading names investment value, investment type/sector and region,
  • Describe whether or not the investment project has an indigenous involvement and/or engagement.
  • Upload quality images and video link if you have them.
  • Provide location details (optional) so we can put it on a map.
  • Provide primary contact details to receive potential investor enquiries.Upload any other project information that you want potential investors to download that supports your investor proposition or "investment pitch".

2. State the impact and alignment of your project to WA investment strategies

When you create your Investment Project you will need to provide details on how it aligns with WA State Governments business sentiment and investment strategies – for example, the impact on jobs, tourism and the Western Australian economy.

3. Submit your investment project for review

Your investment project will be reviewed by our panel to ensure your investment opportunity is an "investment ready" project and satisfies our guidelines and approval process.

Investment ready means that the investment proponent has a clearly articulated business and/or project plan which demonstrates:

  • project feasibility and delivery, including risk management.
  • the strength, experience, capabilities and capacity to execute the proposed project;
  • a growth plan, and how that growth will be funded; and
  • how the investment proponent will need to be in the correct business structure.

3. Submit your project for review

We will review your Project Brief and work with you to make sure it is ready for investors.

4. Approval and listing

We communicate with you via email as you create, save, submit and revise your investment opportunity. Our team may contact you directly during the review and revision process. We will always confirm by email after your investment project has been approved by us for listing.
